Hiking trails to the Bohor Hills from Planina pri Sevnici

Bohor forms the natural southern border of the Kozjansko region and is full of hiking and cycling trails. Many visitors are drawn to this highest mountain range in this part of Slovenia for its preserved nature and peaceful remoteness.

From the Šentjur Tour destination, hiking trails to Bohor start at Planina pri Sevnici. In Planina pri Sevnici, you will find a self-service shop, a bakery, a pharmacy, and a bar and an inn. At the Hiša Wambrechtsamer, in addition to drinks, they also offer à la carte dishes and desserts. Their offer is complemented by apartment and room rentals.

Trail Planina pri Sevnici–Veliki Javornik

At 1,023 meters, Veliki Javornik is the highest peak of the Bohor range and also the highest peak in the Kozjansko region. Its summit is marked by a stone pillar erected between 1963–65, as Veliki Javornik is one of the 35 points of the first-order trigonometric network. The peak was designated as a first-order point already at the beginning of the 19th century, during the Austrian Empire. Veliki Javornik is also one of the rare natural habitats of the winter aconite in Slovenia. This delicate flower grows 5–15 cm tall, has five green sepals, and a single bright yellow blossom. It often blooms while the ground is still covered with snow. Its habitat is protected.

The trail begins at the cemetery parking lot in Planina pri Sevnici (on the hill above the gas station), where free parking is available. We return to the main road and at the intersection by the gas station turn left towards Sevnica. For the next 2 km (about 30 minutes) we walk along the main road Planina pri Sevnici–Sevnica, which descends into the valley at the foot of Bohor. When the road levels out, we reach the hamlet of Stara Žaga. This was once the site of the castle sawmill owned by the lords of Planina Castle. At the road junction, next to the bus stop, we turn left and follow the hiking signs for the Bohor Hut. Passing a cluster of houses, we stay on the road, which becomes a well-maintained gravel track. The trail runs through the Sevnična Gorge. We follow the signs carefully—twice the trail markings direct us off the gravel road and onto a forest path along the stream. However, we can also continue along the gravel road; either way, we reach a crossroads of forest roads. On the right, we notice a farm building. Here, we turn right onto the ascending road, following the sign for Bohor Hut. At the next junction, we keep left—taking the right path would lead us to the Bohor Hunting Lodge. When the road flattens out, we find ourselves at the saddle between the two peaks of Bohor. To the left lies Veliki Koprivnik (984 m), and to the right Veliki Javornik. At the crossroads marked by a cross, we turn right and continue along the road. When it ends in a turnaround area, we proceed on a forest track. At the next junction, we keep to the right, following the signs—taking the left would lead to Skalica and, before that, Mali Javornik. The trail gradually begins to climb. Following the trail markers, we arrive at a forest clearing on the summit of Veliki Javornik. Soon we see the concrete pillar marking the highest point of Bohor. At the top, there is a hiking log book and a hiking stamp. On the western edge of the clearing, there is a wooden bench and a viewpoint.

We return the same way, or we can follow the signs to Skalica. This path leads from the southwestern edge of the clearing and descends steeply to the road. Turning right, we soon reach the first junction, where we can either climb Mali Javornik (989 m) or bypass it to reach the next saddle between Skalica and Mali Javornik. From there, we follow the signs for Planina pri Sevnici, leading us past the Bohor Hunting Lodge and Možnica to Stara Žaga.

Trail Planina pri Sevnici–Veliki Koprivnik

Veliki Koprivnik (984 m) is a peak in the central part of the Bohor range. Although the summit is covered with mixed forest, views open up from the edges towards the south. From here, you can clearly see the Posavje region and, in the distance, the outline of the Gorjanci hills. Veliki Koprivnik is also one of the rare natural habitats of the winter aconite in Slovenia. This early harbinger of spring often blooms while the ground is still covered with snow. Its habitat is protected.

The trail begins at the cemetery parking lot in Planina pri Sevnici (on the hill above the gas station), where free parking is available. We return to the main road and at the intersection by the gas station turn left towards Sevnica. Passing a cluster of houses, we continue along the road, which turns into a well-maintained gravel track. The trail leads through the Sevnična Gorge. We carefully follow the markings—twice they lead us from the gravel road onto a forest path by the stream. Alternatively, we can remain on the gravel road. Either way, we reach a junction of forest roads. On the right, we notice a farm building. Here, we turn right onto the ascending road, following the sign for Bohor Hut. At the next crossroads, we keep left—taking the right would lead to the Bohor Hunting Lodge. When the road levels out, we arrive at the saddle between the two peaks of Bohor. To the left stands Veliki Koprivnik, to the right Veliki Javornik (1,023 m). Shortly after the roadside cross, the trail markers lead us left uphill. This forest path takes us to the summit. From the last junction, the ascent to the top takes about 15 minutes. At the summit, there is a hiking log book and a hiking stamp.

We return the same way, or only as far as the crossroads at the cross, where we can also climb Veliki Javornik. This easy ascent along a forest road or path takes about 40 minutes of moderate walking. From there, we can descend and follow the trail markers to Mali Javornik (989 m) and Skalica (951 m). At the saddle between these two peaks, we follow the hiking signs back to Planina pri Sevnici. This option extends the hike by about 2 hours, with the possibility of also climbing Mali Javornik along the way.

Trail Planina pri Sevnici–Skalica

Skalica (951 m) is a peak on the southwestern edge of the Bohor range. Its distinct features are its remoteness, the steep ascent to the summit, and the picturesque view of Mrzla Planina. The trail takes us past the Bohor Hunting Lodge (842 m), Vrh Možnice (926 m), and Mali Javornik (989 m).

The starting point of the hike is the cemetery parking lot in Planina pri Sevnici (on the hill above the gas station), where free parking is available. We return to the main road and at the intersection by the gas station turn left towards Sevnica. For the next 2 km (about 30 minutes) we follow the main road Planina pri Sevnici–Sevnica, which descends into the valley at the foot of Bohor. When the road levels out, we reach the hamlet of Stara Žaga, where, in the second half of the 19th century, a sawmill owned by the nearby Planina Castle once operated. At the junction by the bus stop, we turn left and follow the hiking sign for Skalica via Možnica, passing a cluster of houses. At a marked turn behind the houses, we turn right onto a gravel road that soon becomes a cart track. A little further up, it crosses a forest road. The trail gradually climbs through the forest along a woodland path. Along the way, we pass a hunting observation tower and a feeding site for wild animals. We then join a wider, well-maintained gravel road, turn right, and shortly afterwards left onto a forest path that later rejoins the same road. In this way, we circle around Vrh Možnice from the northwest side.

Continuing along the gravel road, we reach the saddle between Vrh Možnice and Mali Javornik. At the crossroads, we see signposts for Skalica and Mali Javornik, while on the left stands the Bohor Hunting Lodge. Although the lodge does not provide catering services and is only open on special occasions, it has benches to take a rest and have a snack we bring with us. From here, it is about 30 minutes to the Skalica. Following the signs for Skalica, the trail first leads us along the road, then onto a cart track. The next junction is at the saddle between Skalica and Mali Javornik. Here we turn right and start the ascent along a forest path. The climb is at times steep. At the summit, we find a hiking log book and a hiking stamp. Hikers can enjoy the view while resting on the rocks or on a simple wooden bench.

We can return along the same route, or at the junction below Skalica head towards Veliki Javornik and at Škofov križ (sign cross) turn left onto the road leading back to Stara Žaga. Another option is to return via the road past the Bohor Hunting Lodge, which also leads to Stara Žaga. Both alternatives extend the hike.
